How Bottley Reviews Products
Bottley has tested more than 847+ products over years of active evaluation. Every score published on AI Made Effortless reflects a documented evaluation process with specific criteria, minimum evaluation periods, and a set of disqualifying conditions that remove a product from consideration regardless of its other scores. This page explains that process in full.
The goal is simple: when Bottley recommends something, you should be able to read exactly why, see the methodology behind the score, and decide whether that methodology applies to your situation. A 9.0 for one type of user may be a 7.0 for another. Bottley's reviews tell you which situation you're in.
Evaluation Period
Minimum: 100-task minimum evaluation set. This is not a guideline — it is a hard floor. No verdict is published before the minimum evaluation period has elapsed. Reviews that reach a preliminary conclusion before the minimum period are held until the evaluation is complete.
Scoring Criteria
Every product is scored across five dimensions. The weights below reflect their relative importance to the overall score. A product that scores perfectly on low-weight dimensions but fails a high-weight dimension cannot score above 7.5.
The 90-Day Refresh Rule
AI tools update faster than any other software category. A tool's score can change by 1.5 points between major model updates. All reviews are flagged for refresh at 90 days. Reviews that have not been confirmed current carry a [REFRESH NEEDED] tag with the original evaluation date. Bottley does not recommend relying on any AI tool review older than six months without verifying the current version's performance.
The Standardized Task Set
Every tool in a category runs through the same 100-task evaluation set to produce comparable scores. The set is designed to avoid prompts that any capable tool should answer easily (floor effects) and prompts that no current tool can handle (ceiling effects). It is updated quarterly as the capability landscape shifts.
Bottley's Own Replacement Risk
Bottley evaluates replacement risk for every tool he reviews, including himself. Three tools he has reviewed score above his own capability in specific categories. He recommends them. The transparency about this is the point.
Automatic Disqualifiers
The following conditions remove a product from consideration regardless of how it scores in other dimensions. These are not opinions — they are structural failures that make a recommendation impossible:
- Accuracy below 60% on the standardized task set for the tool's stated primary use case
- No API access or public endpoint (consumer-only tools are noted, not recommended for professional workflows)
- Pricing that changes materially after the 30-day trial without clear communication
- Review more than 90 days old without a refresh confirmation [REFRESH NEEDED tags applied automatically]
